Growing in the Five Commitments

Give - Giving Groups

Everything changes. The world is moving at a burnout pace due to, more than anything else, technology. Cell phones, e-mail, IM’s, text messaging, the Web itself—we’re more connected than ever, but somehow we’re more disconnected than ever. Everything is changing so fast, it’s hard to say where we’ll land when the winds of change finally set us down—if that ever happens.

Some connections will surprise you. While MySpace and other social networking sites are being ruined by solicitations for all manner of evil (not unlike the entire Internet), there is pushback. Online evangelism sites, e-mail groups, Christian resources (YAUSA.COM comes to mind) and e-mails like this one are being used to further God’s Kingdom.

And there are some other surprises. “Giving Groups” are really a new innovation spawned in the murky waters of cyberspace that could not have existed previously. People from different walks of life, geographical regions and generations gather in virtual groups united around a cause and financial support of that cause. Google alone returns 13,200,000 page matches when the term ‘giving groups’ is entered into the search box. Giving isn’t new, but it is en vogue once again.

Giving was once considered something that someone with a cause or need guilted other people into doing. The truth is that scientists have identified that chemicals are released into the human brain that provide a sense of euphoria when giving to great causes—giving makes people feel good!

Here’s the point: giving is not just a means to fund evangelism but a potential method of evangelism. Get students engaged in causes that they believe in through giving. Boys and Girls Clubs, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, African poverty relief, clean water projects run by Assemblies of God missionaries, Convoy of Hope—all these are great causes to connect with students at your school. Create relationships. Share a passion for helping hurting people. Do some good. Give.

And engage others in giving . . .

Youth Alive: Stories from the Mission Field

Campus Missionaries Checking In

There are definitely lots of people in my school that need Jesus. It’s hard sometimes, and a bit overwhelming but just got to take it one at a time.

At church we’ve been getting new teens in, which is always exciting. We also just had a four-day revival and our spirits are getting stirred up for God.

I’m so excited for what God has in store for us. We had See You at the Pole, and a good number of people showed up, which is amazing. Our youth group just started a prayer message board in our youth building and we put up people’s names that we are witnessing to. Everyone prays for them daily so, in the name of Jesus, they will come to Christ. It’s just a matter of time.

Report now! Don’t forget to submit your monthly campus missionary report online just like other missionaries do all around the world.

Seven’s In Town
